Chapter Fourteen

Ty cursed as he strode from the trailer. What had he been thinking? They trusted him because they thought he was protecting her, not bedding her. If he found out, Colt would take him out back and strap him. Cody too. And he deserved it. What the fuck was wrong with him? God, what he wouldn’t give for a cigarette right now. He had too much energy and he needed to settle his thoughts, not to mention get rid of a raging hard-on. He blew out a breath and kept walking. He’d circle the fairgrounds all night long if he had to. He damn well wasn’t returning to Maybelle’s trailer and her entirely too winsome ways.

All that talk about virginity and fucking had him out of sorts. Maybelle was unlike any woman he’d ever been with, and he’d been with plenty over the span of his twenty-year career. He’d pursued, and been pursued, and long-ago, when he’d been too young, there’d even been a woman he’d wanted to marry, but she’d wanted him to quit touring. That had been a deal-breaker. But now, at the sunset of his career, everything was different. Being locked up for three years had something to do with it. Colt and Cody had paid him annual visits when they’d come to Colorado for the National Western, but no one else. The realization he’d spent his life in an industry in which he had few real friends — the kind that stick with you through the shit — tore him apart. The loneliness of lock-up had been soul crushing, and he vowed when he got out he’d be different — he’d be a better friend. He was through with surface-level relationships of any kind.

Which brought him back to Maybelle. Ty slowed to a stop when he reached the roughstock pens, and eyed a pair of bulls quietly munching their feed. Maybelle was special. Fiery and sweet all rolled up into one. He cursed and toed a rock sticking up out of the dirt. All that talk about spanking. Holy fuck. She had no idea what she did to him.

But Maybelle deserved better than a dirty old bastard like him with a proclivity for bossing in the bedroom. She was the kind of woman that men married and made babies with. A vision of her with a swollen belly ripped through him, making his chest so tight it hurt to breathe. He’d make her first time so good neither of them would ever forget it. But that didn’t mean he should. Ultimately, she’d develop feelings for him, even if she promised not to, and then it would get complicated. He wasn’t in a position to support a woman, let alone a family. And she deserved someone younger, more her age — someone with the best years of their life still in front of them.

“You look like you’re wrestling with something, everything okay?” Asked Trace Walker, one of Cody and Colt’s promising students. He was a little too old to make a career of it, but Trace was a good student and would make a little money.
